For many Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of the summer. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that this Labor Day weekend may be the Illinois Tollway’s busiest ever. The traffic congestion can be attributed to the improving economy and the decline in gas prices in the Chicago area. Tollway officials are predicting a record 7.2 million drivers will travel the system Friday through Tuesday.
Increased Risks on the Roads
Unfortunately with an increase in traffic, comes an increase in the likelihood of an accident. Watch for speeding and make sure you are not distracted while driving. Collisions can be extremely serious as so many drivers navigate the busy roadways and construction zones. This was the case as reported by the Chicago Tribune. A truck driver from Indiana was involved in an accident on Interstate 55 in which five people died. Allegedly, the truck driver was speeding through a construction zone, failed to decrease his speed or keep a proper lookout, and had physical conditions that limited his visual ability. As a result of the accident, the truck driver has been charged with reckless homicide.
