Single-vehicle accidents are the cause of about one out of five traffic-related fatalities. Every year in the United States around 8,000 people are killed in these crashes. Single-vehicle collisions often involve a vehicle leaving the road and striking an object or rolling over.
Drivers can take steps to reduce their risks of being in a single-vehicle crash. By not driving on curvy roads or icy roads, a person can greatly reduce their risk of being in a single vehicle crash.
Some common driving behaviors are responsible for most of these crashes. Many drivers involved in single-vehiclecrashes were drinking at the time of the collision. Another major risk factor is speeding. In 90 percent of run-off-road (ROR) collisions, drivers were speeding. Distracted driving also contributes to these crashes. In many cases, drivers are looking at their phones, but distracted drivers can also be eating, fiddling with a radio dial, or doing any other thing that takes their attention away from driving. Distracted drivers have a 75 percent greater risk of being in a deadly crash.
