Chicago Traffic Accidents in Real-Time

JOLIET, IL- The chicago.suntimes.com writes that a woman from Lockport died in a rollover accident that took place on Monday, November 5, 2018. The crash took place on Interstate 80 in Joliet.

The victim, 22-year-old Jeanine Ibrahim was operating a 2016 Toyota Corolla at a little after one in the afternoon in the eastbound lanes. Reports indicate that the Corolla left the roadway and struck a tree before flipping over.

The victim was declared at the scene. Ibrahim did not have her seatbelt on at the time of the crash.

Only three percent of crashes involve a vehicle rolling over. However, about 30 percent of roadway fatalities are caused by rollover crashes indicating just how fatal these crashes are to vehicle occupants.

One major factor in whether a person will survive a rollover crash or not is whether the person is using their seatbelt.  In 2016, 67 percent of people who died in rollover collisions were not using their seatbelts. One of the reasons that not wearing a seatbelt in one of these collisions is so deadly is that people can be thrown from their vehicle if they are not restrained. Vehicle ejections are extremely deadly. Seatbelts also are designed to prevent vehicle occupants from hitting their head on the roof of their vehicle when it overturns.

Seat belts save thousands of lives every year. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that around 15,000 people survived car accidents because of their seatbelts. The chances of being injured or dying ina collision drop by about half when a person uses a seatbelt. While airbags offer added protection, they work best when a person is using a seatbelt.

MACON COUNTY, IL- Wandtv.com writes that a cyclist was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Macon County on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. The incident occurred at around 6:48 in the evening when a vehicle that was driving westbound on Route 36 struck the victim and then left the scene, driving away in the direction of Decatur.

The incident took place close to the town of Casner. Based on a piece of a bumper that was found at the site of the accident, the police suspect that the vehicle was a red Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle most likely sustained damage to its wheel well and front passenger bumper.

The cyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash and wastransported to the hospital.

The incident was named the Crime of the Week, and deputies are requesting that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers.

Hit-and-run crashes are increasing each year across the United States. In 2916, 2049 people died in hit-and-run accidents indicating that the rate of hit-and-run fatalities has gone up by 62 percent since 2009. The victims of these crashes are often cyclists and pedestrians. These two groupsaccount for 65 percent of all victims in fatal hit-and-run crashes.

The most likely time for these crashes is between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. because during those hours there are less likely to be witnesses and drivers feel they can escape without being held accountable.

When drivers leave the scene of an accident, they face harsh penalties, even if they were not initially at fault for the crash. Drivers who flee the scene often render the victim helpless, thereby increasing the harm done.

Vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death for teenagers in the United States. The chances of teens drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 have a risk of dying in a crash that is three times as high as the risk is for drivers 20 and older.

The reasons teens are more at risk include inexperience, driving with the distraction of other teen passengers in the vehicle, driving at night, failing to use their seatbelts. Distracted driving, drowsy driving, driving recklesslyand driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) remind parents to set up rules for their teen drivers that address the risk factors. It is important that parents are involved in educating their teenage drivers about road safety.

GREENUP- According to jg-tc.com, two people sustained injuries in a crash in Cumberland County on Interstate 70 on Sunday, November 4, 2018. The crash took place while it was raining.

Reports from the Illinois State Police indicate that the crash took place at about 12:20 p.m. when a pickup truck was driving onto the entrance ramp at mile marker 119 on I-70. The driver of the pickup truck, Makenna R. Ochs, lost control of the vehicle on the slick road. The truck slid sideways and hit an SUV that was traveling eastbound in the left lane.

The vehicles both ended up on the median.

The occupants of the SUV, 49-year-old Larry D. Burroughsand 51-year-old Cheryl M. Burroughs, both of Louisville, were both transported to the St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital.

Police cited Ochs for his failure to reduce his speed to avoid an accident.

Weather can be one contributing factor in some accidents because it can reduce drivers’ visibility and have a negative impact on vehicle performance by reducing traction on the road. While snow and ice are often associated with unsafe driving conditions, the weather condition that is the deadliest is rain. Part of the reason could be that rain is more common and is common in more regions across the country. Another factor is that people are more likely to exercise an abundance of caution on icy roads or when it is snowing but may let their guard down during more common weather conditions like rain. Rain also impacts driver visibility and can cause roads to become slippery. In situations where there has not been rainin some time, oil can build up on the road and increase the slickness of the roadway once it rains.
