Jasper County Crash on Illinois 33 Hospitalizes Three

WHEELER, IL- The herald-review.com writes that a three-vehicle crash in Jasper County sent three individuals to the hospital on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. The crash took place on Illinois 33.

The crash took place when a 29-year-old man from Dieterich was driving his Toyota westbound and suddenly veered into the opposite lanes of traffic. The Toyota side-swiped an eastbound Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old man from Newton. The truck crashed into a ditch on the side of the road.

A 24-year-old woman from Saint Marie who was driving a Chrysler minivan swerved to avoid the crash and drove into the ditch as well.

All three drivers were transported to the HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that they sustained in the crash.

The man from Dietrich was cited for “improper lane usage, reckless conduct, aggravated battery, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and driving without insurance.”

When drivers veer over the center line of a road, they risk being involved in head-on collisions. The forces involved in head-on collisions are tremendous, and many of these accidents end in fatalities. Unfortunately, even responsible, alert and attentive drivers can find themselves, victims of these types of crashes, because they have little or no time to avoid being struck by a car that is traveling in the opposite direction that swerves into their lane.

The best way to avoid dying in a head-on collision is to avoid roads that have no divider between opposing lanes of traffic is the speed limit is greater than 40 miles per hour. Studies indicate that the survival rate for head-on collisions drops dramaticallywhen vehicles are traveling above 43 miles per hour.
