29-Year-Old Killed in Will County, Illinois Collision

WILL COUNTY, IL- Abc7chicago.com reports that Thomas Stiso, 29, was killed in a collision on Monday, May 14, 2018. The crash happened at around 3:40 p.m. on I-57.

Stiso was traveling north on I-57 when he was rear-ended by a Cadillac Escalade. Stiso’s vehicle was pushed into the tractor-trailer in front of him. Stiso died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Cadillac, 45-year-old Michael Rodriguez, was traveling with a child in his vehicle. The child was not restrained in a car seat and was ejected from the vehicle through the rear passenger window. The child and Rodriguez both suffered injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Neither’s injuries were considered life-threatening.

The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old man from Hinsdale was not harmed in the crash.

Rodriguez is facing charges for failing to reduce his speed to avoid an accident, for failing to use a proper child restraint system, and for driving on a revoked license. Traffic at the time of the accident was reportedly moving slowly.

Illinois has seen an increase in the number of traffic fatalities over the past few years. The reason for the increase is unclear, but Kelsea Gurski from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has stated that distracted driving is an ongoing concern that causes many serious accidents. Despite the laws and educations campaigns that have been implemented to prevent distracted driving, a survey conducted by the National Safety Council indicated that almost half of drivers still feel comfortable texting while driving.
