Data from Chicago indicates that pedestrian deaths in the city have been on the rise. In 2017, 46 pedestrians were killedin the city as compared with the previous year when 44 people were struck and killed. The five-year average number of pedestrians killed in Chicago was 38.2, indicating that the number of pedestrians killed has been rising each year. Local pedestrian deaths have been increasing since 2013, but not as quickly as the national average, which went up by 11% between 2015 and 2016. Other traffic-related deaths have increased as well.

The higher number of fatalities is occurring in spite of Chicago’s Vision Zero plan, which has a stated goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities in the city by the year 2026.

Many of the fatalities that occurred last year happened in places that the Vision Zero plan has identified as high-risk locations. The city is implementing educational outreach programs and installing pedestrian-friendlyinfrastructure updates. The initiative is still new, so there is hope that as more aspects of the plan go into effect, the city will experience a decline in traffic fatalities. In New York City, where Vision Zero went into effect in 2014, traffic fatalities have dropped by 28%, and pedestrian deaths have gone down by 45%.
