A Blastof Winter Weather Causes Major Havoc on Roads

St. Clair County, Illinois — Illinois State Troopers responded to almost 75 crashes in 5-plus hours Friday, November 9, 2018, including an accident involving one of their own. Winter weather contributed to all of the accidentsfrom 6:45 p.m. and midnight Friday in St. Clair County as a fierce winter-like storm blew in so quickly that caught many people off guard. Fortunately, no one died in any of the wrecks. However, one state trooper suffered injuries when other motorists slammed into his cruiser from behind according to the Belleville News-Democrat.

Illinois State Police brass called for reinforcements Friday night because the number of troopers on patrol could not manage the volume ofcalls for service for accidents. All told, state police recorded 73 accidentsin a span of 5 hours and 15 minutes. The region was completely caught off guard by the swift-movingwinter blast.

The injured trooper was caught in a pile-upwhile responding to a crash on the southbound side on Interstate 55, not too far from Illinois Route 111. Multiple cars slid into the trooper’s vehicle. The trooperrequired emergency transportation to a St. Louis hospital. The hospital treated and released the trooperwithout indicating the nature or severity of the trooper’s injuries. The state police did not release the trooper’s name.

Interstate 55 southbound was not the only area in which motorists encountered a multi-vehicle accident. State police along with other emergency responders including St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency officials closed Illinois 15 in both directions in the area of Demazenod Drive because of a pile-up that ledto numerous injuries. None of the responding agencies commented on the severity of any of the injuries.

One state police spokesperson was amazed at how quickly the storm materialized and reaped havoc on the area. The spokesperson that the state police always receive calls for service when the weather changes and crashes occur.
