DECATUR, IL- Wandtv.com writes that a woman was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Friday, November 30, 2018, in Decatur, Illinois.
The victim was identified as 78-year-old Barbara Otto of Decatur. Reports indicate that at about 3:45 in the afternoon Otto’s vehicle crashed with a pick-up truck on West Harrison.
Emergency responders transported Otto to the hospital where she died a short while later from injuries she suffered in the collision.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reports that there were 296,060 crashes in Illinois in 2014, with 924 people dying, and 84,649 reported injuries. Out of the total number of accidents, 26,982 involved drivers over the age of 70. Only 5,5 percent of total drivers involved in collisions were from this demographic, and yet people over the age of 70 accounted for 10.2 percent of drivers involved in fatal accidents, and 15.7 percent of the victims of fatal crashes.
The AAA states that older drivers tend to have safer driving habits than other age groups. For instance, drivers in the older age brackets are more likely to use their seatbelts, less likely to speed, and are less likely to drive under the influence of alcohol than are younger drivers. Despite their responsible driving habits, people in this demographic tend to be killed and injured more often than younger people because they have more health-related issues and fragile bones. Because of their age, many older drivers are less likely to recover from the injuries they sustain in car accidents than younger individuals are, which is part of the reason for older drivers having a rate of death among drivers that is second only to teens.
