Adult Halloween Safety

Adult Halloween Safety by Our Chicago Injury Law Firm

Of course, Halloween is a very fun time for children. It can be a very fun time for adults too. In addition to dressing up and eating candy, adults can have fun decorating their houses, carving pumpkins, and throwing Halloween parties. While enjoying this Halloween, here are some safety tips for adults who will be driving, carving pumpkins, and welcoming guests.

Driving on Halloween

October is a dangerous time for motorists and pedestrians. According to the National Safety Council, in the United States, October ranked number two in motor vehicle deaths by month, with 3,370 deaths. However, there are a number of steps that motorists can take to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween. Drivers should be especially careful between four and eight p.m., because that is when the most severe car collision involving young people occur, advises Progressive Insurance. Drive at least five miles per hour below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street, suggests AAA. Do not pass stopped vehicles because the driver might be dropping off children, suggests Progressive. If you have to drop off or pick up trick-or-treaters, make sure to turn on your hazard lights. Be vigilant because children do not always cross the street at an intersection.

Carving a Pumpkin

Small children should not carve pumpkins. Instead, children should draw a face with markers, then parents can cut out the shapes, recommends the American Academy of Pediatrics. Use a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, the AAP suggests using a votive candle. Additionally, candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy surface, away from flammable objects; never leave your pumpkin unattended.

Welcoming Guests

Make sure that all of your outdoor lighting works. Replace those light bulbs that are not functional. In order to keep your home safe for trick-or-treaters and visitors, make sure that you clear your front porch and yard of anything that could cause a person to trip and fall, including such items as garden hoses, toys, bikes, and lawn decorations, advises the AAP. Also, wet leaves and snows should be removed from sidewalks and steps, reminds the AAP. If your pet is prone to jumping or biting, make sure that the animal does not come into contact with guests.
