COLES COUNTY, IL- Wthitv.com writes that a man from Terre Haute has been arrested in relation to a crash that killed a woman in Coles County, Illinois. The victim, identified as April Fischer, 38 of Mattoon, died in a crash that occurred on Tuesday, December 11, 2018.*
The other driver, James Miller, 56, of Terre Haute, survived the crash and is now facing charges for his role in the deadly incident.
When police arrived on the scene, both of the involved vehicles were located in a field near the roadside. Both vehicles sustained severe damage in the crash.Fischer was declared dead at the site of the accident. Miller was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital in Urbana via airlift.
At the hospital, it was determined that Miller had been driving under the influence of alcohol. Police filed charges against Miller for “failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, disobeying a stop sign, improper use of an electronic communication device, and driving under the influence of alcohol.”
In Illinois, as in the rest of the United States, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent ormore. The law was implemented in Illinois over twenty years ago, andsince then, the number of drunk drivers in the state has declined significantly. However, the hundreds of people are still killed in these crashes every year in Illinois alone. The year before the drink driving law went into effect, 534 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaireddrivers. The number has since decreased by 43 percent.
