COLES COUNTY, IL- Wandtv.com writes that one person sustained injuries in a collision that took place on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in Coles County, Illinois.

The crash involved two vehicles collided with one another on Loxa Road. According to reports, Driver John Bennett was attempting to make a left turn off Loxa Road and struck another vehicle. The other driver, Bradly White had a passenger in his vehicle who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The passenger in White’s vehicle was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. The extent of the injuries was not reported.

Police cited Bennet for his failure to yield in the intersection. The injured passenger in White’s vehicle received a citation for failing to use a seatbelt.

The crash is still under investigation.

Seatbelts save thousands of lives a year. Fortunately, the vast majority of Americas use their seatbelts. Recent surveys found that about 90.1 percent of people in the United States use their seatbelts. Vehicle occupants who fail to use their seatbelts make up a disproportionate number of fatal crash victims. This is because these individuals are more likely to be killed and because many of these victims would have likely survived their crashes had they used their seatbelts.

Seatbelts prevent against some of the deadliest types of crash results, such as being ejected from a car. Individuals who are thrown from a vehicle are at about a 75 percent chance of dying. If a vehicle flips over, seatbelts hold vehicle occupants in place and prevent them from smashing their heads into the roof of the vehicle. Additionally, airbags work better when people are restrained because the airbags are designed to inflate where a belted driver or passenger would be best protected.
