CHICAGO, IL- Chicago.cbslocal.com reports that a 74-year-old man was killed in a car accident on May 15, 2018. The collision occurred a little before 1:45 p.m. on Ogden Avenue in Lisle. Two other people were injured in the crash.
The man killed was driving his Nissan Rogue west when he crossed the center line entering the eastbound lanes and hitting a black Acura head-on. There were two people traveling in the Acura, and both sustained severe injuries. All three were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for treatment.
The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Two police officers who responded to the scene were exposed to blood when they provided emergency care to the injured people, such as applying tourniquets. Both were hospitalized because of the exposure but later released.
Traffic near the scene was diverted for around three hours for emergency crews and while the Major Crash Reconstruction Team carried out an investigation.
Head-on collisions are often deadly because the force of the impact is multiplied when you have the vehicles traveling towards one another. Unfortunately, it extremely difficult for innocent drivers to avoid these accidents because they happen so quickly and leave little time to react. While one might imagine that head-on collisions are mostly the result of a driver passing after misjudging the amount of time they have or speeding around a curved road, or because of inclement weather, the majority of these accidents occur on straight roads in good weather. This is because the cause it typically distracted driving. Drivers who are texting, changing the radio station, or who fall asleep are the most common culprits in head-on crashes.
