COLES COUNTY, IL- Jg-tc.com writes that a woman from rural Mattoon was killed in a car accident on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. The victim’s vehicle was struck by another vehicle on its driver’s side at a little before 12 p.m. The accident scene was cleared by about 3:20 in the afternoon.*
Reports from the scene of the incident stated that the vehicles involved in the crash both ended up in a field to the side of the road.
The victim was identified as April Fischer, 38. The driver of the other vehicle was identified as James W. Miller, 56, of Terre Haute, Indiana. Miller reportedly was driving south on Coles County Road and traveled through the intersection with Route 316 without stopping.
Fischer was declared dead at the site of the accident. Miller sustained severe injuries and was transported to the Carle Hospital in Urbana via airlift.
Miller is now facing charges in relation to the collision for “DUI, failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash, disobeying a stop sign, and improper use of an electronic communication device.”
Many crashes take place at stop sign controlled intersections. Drivers frequently violate traffic signals, including stop signs, but also traffic lights. Drivers are less likely to run straight through a stop sign then they are to stop, and then proceed without noticing another vehicle. In some cases, the driver’s view is obstructed at the stop sign, but in many cases, drivers just fail to see another vehicle.
Intersection crashes are often severe because vehicles do not offer much protection on their sides. The front and rear of vehicles offers more protection, but side impacts hit vehicles where they are particularly vulnerable.
