CHICAGO, IL- The chicago.suntimes.com writes that a 54-year-old man was killed in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood on Monday, November 26, 2018, when a car struck him on South King.
The crash took place at around 7 in the evening when the victim walked into the street from between two vehicles that were parked on the side of the road and was hit by a Toyota Camry.
The victim was identified as Eric Morris, from Broadview. Morris was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was later declared dead. Morris’ death was determined to be an accident.
Police issued the 36-year-old driver a citation for “failing to slow down to avoid the crash.”
The crash was being investigated by the Major Accident InvestigationUnit.
Last year saw a rise in traffic-related fatalities in Chicago. Total traffic deaths went from 119 in 2016 to 132 last year. An increased number of traffic fatalities were seen across the United States as well. There are some indications that the rise is from inexpensive gasoline, the improving economy and a high number of drivers who are distracted by their cell phones.
Pedestrian deaths went up last year as well from 44 deaths in 2016 to 46. The five-year average number of fatalities for pedestrians in the city was 38.2 deaths according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Pedestrian fatalities across the country also rose and did so at a faster pace with an 11 percent rise between 2015 and 2016. Disturbingly, the number of pedestrians killed by drivers who fled the scene of the accident has stayed steady at 40 percent.
