OnThursday, November 1, 2018, an Amtrak train reportedly clipped an SUV that was crossing the tracks. The incident took place during rush hour. No one was seriously injured in the incident.Officials have not blamed the construction and related traffic for the accident. However, business owners and people living in the area believe that the construction and the related traffic are at least partially at fault for the crash.
Blake Baum, who owns a restaurant in the area said that the traffic goes down to one lane and that the vehicle was stuck on the tracks. The cars in front of and behind the SUV could not move either.
The construction project involves replacing the sewer line, which is about one hundred years old. The project was meant to be finished by November 7th, but delays have led to the end date being moved back to November 19th.
Business owners have complained that the project and the heavily congested traffic have had a negative impact on their businesses. While they are optimistic that the project will be completed soon, they are wary.
The authorities claim that workers are putting in extra time and working on Saturdays in order to complete their work as much as possible and to allow the businesses to unencumbered by the holidays.
