The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that 3,986 people were killedin accidents involving large trucks in 2016. Trucks can outweigh passenger vehicles by 20 or 30 times as much.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) states that commercial trucks present safety risks to passenger vehicles. The massive size of large trucks means that if they are involved in collisions with smaller passenger vehicles, the occupants of the passenger vehicles are the ones who will typically suffer the injuries. Out of the 296,060 vehicle collisions that took place in Illinois in 2014, 19,945, or just 6.7% involved large trucks. However, 13% of traffic fatalities in the state occurred in a collisioninvolving commercial trucks. In total, 120 people were killed in accidents with large trucks on Illinois roadways in 2014. Out of Illinois’ 61,081 crashes in which there were reportedinjuries, 44,495 were crashes in which one or more large trucks were involved.

The consequences of collisions with large trucks impacted people in smaller vehicles in the majority of accidents. Out of the 120 fatalities involving trucks, 71.7% of those killed were people traveling in vehicles other than the large trucks. The injury statistics are similar, with 74.3% of those injured being occupants of vehicles that collided with trucks and not occupants of the trucks.
