Chicago Traffic Accidents in Real-Time

ILLINOIS- The republictimes.net writes that a car crash that took place on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2018, at about 6:30 in the evening involved a Columbia Police Department vehicle. The police vehicle was a Ford Explorer driven by Steve Patton.*

The police vehicle was struck from behind bya2002 Toyota Sedan. The driver that rear-ended the police vehicle was identified as 38-year-old Daniel Haven who was traveling with two passengers, both of whom were juveniles.

Patton sustained minor injuries in the accident. The passengers traveling in Haven’s Toyota were both taken to Mercy South for treatment of injuries. Reports indicate that neither passenger suffered life-threatening injuries.

Haven received citations for “failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no insurance.”

Rear-end accidentsand car crashes, in general, are typically the result of driver errors. In the case ofrear-end crashes, drivers often simply fail to watch the road in front of them. When drivers are not paying attention to the street, theyoften fail to notice when traffic begins to slow down, or when they need to come to a stop. In many situations, distracted driving is to blame for these types of accidents. Texting anddriving, in particular, is a pervasive problem that causes many car crashes. While it is illegal to text while driving, officers often complain that this law is difficult to enforce and that many people still engage in this dangerous behavior.

Another issue that often occurs on the holidays is that drivers are coming and going from festivities where they have consumed alcohol. For this reason, the roadways often have a higher number of drivers on the road and a higher number of impaired drivers making crashes more likely.
