CHICAGO — a taxi cab and sports utility vehicle collided at Chicago’s Navy Pier and injured eight pedestrians. The accident transpired around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018, according to Foxnews.com. First responders initially believed that all eight pedestrians suffered injuries ranging from serious to life-threatening. However, the injured pedestrians were lucky to have suffered only minor injuries.
One witness vividly described the incident. The witness stated that he heard a loud bang and turned around in response. Upon turning, he saw a taxi cab going speeding through an intersection and slam into an SUV. The taxi then bounded off ofthe SUV and hopped a curb. The cabthen crashed into a group of people using the sidewalk. The witness said that he looked up and all he saw was “devastation.”
Chicago police investigating the incident said that the crash was not an intentional act. However, the police did not provide a reason for the accidentat this time. Additionally, the police did not say if they would charge the driver with any crimes or civil motor vehicle infractions. The taxi driver suffered injuries in the accident in addition to the pedestrians. There was no information regarding the taxi driver’s condition or the physical condition of the occupants of the SUV.
Taxi accidents frequently occur in Illinois. According to the latest statistics accumulated by theIllinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), 5,271 taxi accidents occurred in 2015. Three people died,andover 1,000 suffered some degree of injury. 134 of which IDOT listed as an “A-injury,” that being severe or catastrophic, but not amounting to death.
The majority of taxi crashes that occurred in 2015 that resulted in either property damage or injury were rear-endcollisions. IDOT calculated the amount of rear-endcrashesat 1,725, one of which was fatal. The next most-frequent taxi accident in 2015 in Illinois was a sideswipe collision with cars going in the same direction.
