Fixed object crashes involve vehicles traveling off the roadway and striking an object, such as a tree or utility pole. These crashes cause a high number of fatalities on the road. Single-vehicle collisions are most often the result of driver mistakes. When a vehicle veers off the roadway in a one-car accident, speed is almost always a factor. Studies indicate that 90 percent of these types of crashes involve speeding.
Alcohol also commonly factors into single-vehicle accidents, as does distracted driving. Drivers need only momentarily take their eyes off the road to cause a severe crash. Texting and driving is a common behavior that is illegally in Illinois, but that still causes many crashes. It is difficult to enforce laws regarding texting and driving which means that many drivers feel that they can get away with this risky action. While drivers can greatly lower their chance of being involved in this kind of accident by driving responsibly, the best way to keep people on the road safe is to make the roads themselves safer. One way is to limit the number of objects on the roadside.
