Fixed object crashes are accidents in which a vehicle leaves the road and hits an object. These crashes are often severe. Trees tend to be the object that most vehicles hit, followed by utility poles. A vehicle can veer off the road very quickly when a driver swerves, takes their eyes off the road, misses a curve, or if the road is slippery. While most of these accidents could be avoided by safe and cautious driving, safety measures that are focused on altering driver behavior are not often effective. It is possible to make roads safer and reduce the number of crashes and roadway fatalities. One way to do so is to avoid placing objects near roadways. If possible, objects like utility poles should be kept further from roads to avoid vehicles hitting them at high speeds. In many cases, objects might need to be located near roads. In these situations, barriers or breakaways may be able to lower the risk of serious injuries or deaths. Reducing speed limits is another possible way to lower the risk to drivers, but in Illinois, speed limits have recently increased on many roads.
