SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A dramatic collision between two vehicles on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, took two lives and now the coroner’s office has released additional information about those who died, according to Fox Illinois. The incident continues to be investigated by the Sangamon sheriff’s deputies who responded to the scene.
The Sangamon County Coroner’s office identified the two people who died as 57-year-old Patrick Pletz of Springfield and 76-year-old Barbara Pope, also formerly from Springfield. Autopsies of the two decedents show that the injuries sustained in the collision caused their deaths.
The preliminary investigation conducted by the Sangamon sheriff’s officereveals that deputies responded to the scene of the crash at 200 North OaklaneRoad in Springfield around 2:55 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies noted that the crash site was north of Mechanicsburg Blacktop. That is where deputies say that the vehicle driven by Mr. Pletz in a southerly direction without warning or apparent reason left southbound lane and went into the northbound lane. Mr. Pletz’ vehicle struck the car in which Ms. Pope rode head-on.
Sheriff’s deputies and medical personnel determined that Ms. Pope sustained mortal injuries in the crash. They transported her to Memorial Medical Center’s emergency department. Physicians there determined she could not be revived. The driver of the car in which Ms. Pope rode suffered severe injuries and required emergency treatment at St. John’s Hospital. Medics took Mr. Pletz to St. John’s Hospital as well. Treating physicians declared him deceased at 4:40 p.m. that afternoon.
The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office deployed its Accident Reconstruction Unit to the scene. They are tasked with documenting the evidence at the site of the collision and to determine why Mr. Pletz lost control over his vehicle and veered into oncomingtraffic. The Accident Reconstruction Unit is following through with its investigation. The prognosis of the surviving driver was not disclosed.
