Rear-end collisions kill an average of about 17,000 people in the United States every year. Another 500,000 people suffer injuries in these collisions. Many of these collisions could be prevented throughtechnology that already exists. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended that collision avoidance systems should be standard in all vehicles. A spokesperson for the NTSB stated that car makers do not charge extra for seatbelts to be installed in vehicles, and newer safety technologies should similarly be automatically included in vehicles.

According to estimates made by the NTSB, about 80 percent of rear-end collision deaths could be avoided if collision avoidance systems were included in all vehicles. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) stated thatresearch indicates that many accidents could be prevented with the technology, which is already available in certain models.

The Governors Highway Safety Association supported the recommendations made by the NTSB, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its own numbers indicating that an estimated 87 percent of rear-end accidents occur because of drivers failing to pay attention to the road. Cell phones and other distractions are major contributing factors to these types of accidents.
