Crash on I-80 Claims Life of Iowa Man in Ladd, Illinois

LADD- The newstrib.com reports that a man was killed in a rollover collision on I-80 on Sunday, July 8, 2018. The driver was identified as 28-year-old Rajak Singh Randhawa.

According to Illinois State Police, Randhawa was traveling west when he veered off of the roadway at about 4:43 p.m. Randhawa’s vehicle entered the median where it rolled over several times before stopping in the eastbound lanes of I-80 and catching fire. Randhawa was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled. Randhawa was taken to St. Margaret’s Hospital by ambulance, but his injuries proved fatal.

Rollover collisions often prove deadly. The likelihood of dying in a crash where a vehicle flips is higher than the chances of dying in other types of collisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that there wereapproximately 9.1 million passenger vehicle accidents in 2010. Only 2.1% of the total number of crashes involved a vehicle rolling over. However, while rollovers might be fairly rare, they account for 35% of traffic-related deaths.

The data from the NHTSA also showed that a high percentage of the people killed were not wearing seatbelts when their vehicles rolled. In fact, 69% of the victims ofrollover accidents were not using their seatbelts. Thisis much lower than the percentage of Americans that now where their seatbelts. As of 2016, 90.1% of Americans buckle up when they are traveling in a motor vehicle. The NHTSA estimates that 14,668 people’s lives were saved in 2016 because they had their seat belt on when they got into a car crash. Another 2,456 people would have likely survived accidents if they had chosen to buckle up.
