Inclement weather is frequently a factor in traffic accidents. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports that there are around 5,891,000 vehicle collisions annually in the United States, 1,235,000 of which were at least partially the result of bad weather conditions. Around 418,005 people are hurt in these accidents, and 5,376 people die in weather-related accidents every year.

Rain and wet pavement are the leading causes of weather-related accidents.

Avoiding weather-related accidents can be challenging, but there are steps that you can take to reduce your chances of being involved in a serious collision.First and foremost, slow down, even if it means driving below the speed limits. Be on the watch for black ice, which is difficult to see, but will reflect in a person’s headlights. This type of transparent ice often forms in areas such as bridges or in the shadow of a building. Never follow too closely behind another vehicle on slick roadways. Braking on slick roads can cause a vehicle to skid. Do not brake while turning, which can cause a vehicle to spin out.
