MACOUPIN COUNTY, IL- Mdjonline.com writes that a woman was killed in a collision on Saturday, November 3, 2018, in Macoupin County. The victim was identified as Lyndall Huff, 66, from Carlinville, Illinois.
The collision occurred on Illinois Route 111 when a 2004 Ford pickup truck that was traveling south, crossedthe center line, and drove into the northbound lanes. Huff was in a 2012 GMC pickup truck which collided head-on with the Ford.
Huff was declared dead at the scene of thecrash as a result of severe trauma to her head and chest. The man driving the Ford and a passenger in Huff’s vehicle were both transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Policeidentified the driver of the Ford as 44-year-old Spencer Powers, of Glenam, Illinois. Police issued Powers citations for “improper lane usage, driving on a suspended or revoked license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving too fast for conditions.”
As a result of the collision, the highway was shut down from the time of the crash, at about 6:25 p.m., until around seven hours later. The Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit is carrying out an investigation.
Head-on collisions are extremely dangerous because when vehicles strike one another while traveling in opposite directions, the forces at which the collision occurs are not just doubled but are multiplied. A crash at 40 miles per hour has only one-quarterof the force of a crash at 80 miles per hour.
Unfortunately, for responsible drivers, avoiding a head-on collision can be difficult. When a driver veers across a center line, it happens so quickly that not much time remains for the driver on the opposite lane to reactor avoid the collision.
