CHICAGO, IL- Wgntv.com writes that a roofer died in a fire that broke out on the top of a parking garage in River North on Sunday, December 30, 2018. The Chicago Fire Department is investigating the cause of the deadly blaze.*
Early reports indicate that the elevator shaft might have been building up vapors which then were lighted by an open flame.
The victim was identified as Terrell Webster, 47. Four other people suffered injuries. Webster’s family is now grieving the loss oftheir loved one. Webster’s son Torrie described his father as the “life of the family.”
Webster was a roofer for his entire career, andhe and his son put the roof on their own home together. The victim had celebrated his birthday in December 24thand had just purchased a new car for his parents.
Webster was working on the building in River North, which was a new project for him, at the time of his death. Webster was in charge of a crew working on the building. Torrie Webster says that he is confused as to how the accident could have occurred because his father was always very concerned about safety.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fewer fires have been happening in recent years than in decades past. Still, fire departments in the United States were called intothe location of a fire on an average of every 24 seconds in 2017. There were 499,000 structure fires that year, and 3,400 civilian fire fatalities. The vast majority of people killed in fires in the United States died in their homes.
