MANTENO, IL- Daily-journal.com reports that a truck driver was killedin an accident that occurred on Friday, May 25, 2018. The Victim, 47-year-old Alejandro Quiroga was behind his tractor-trailer performing maintenance in the eastbound lanes of 12000 N Road around 4 a.m. whenhe was hit by an eastbound Dodge Dakota.
After striking Quiroga, the Dodge entered the westbound lanes where an oncoming Ford Ranger the Dakota. The driver of the Dakota suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was transported via airlift to a Chicago hospital where he was reportedly in critical condition.
The driver of the westbound Ford was uninjured.
Performing maintenance on the roador the side of the road is a dangerous activity. People who pull to the side of a roadway to do simple repairs on a car, or even to wait for help, are in a vulnerable position. This is often the case with flat tires. Perhaps the driver knows how to change a flat and does not want to ride too far on the tire because it could cause damage to the rim or worse. However, pulling onto the shoulder might be too great of a risk.
The first thing you should do is attempt toget far away from the road. Do not pull over too close to traffic. If possible, pull into a parking lot or another safe area. Additionally, make sure you do everything possible to make your vehicle visible. Use the hazards, light flares- anything that will draw attention to the fact that you are on the side of the road.
