The other vehicle was a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, which was also driving north. The Malibu crashed into the back of Lawrence’s vehicle. The driver of the Malibu left the scene on foot.

Hit and run crashes have been increasing across the United States. One of the major problems with these types of accidents is that many drivers are never caught. In some places, the law even creates a perverse incentive for drivers to flee the scene of an accident that they cause. This is because if a driver is under the influence and causes a crash, he or she will face severe penalties, and in some cases, more severe penalties than they would face for leaving the scene of the crash. As a result, a driver who leaves and has the opportunity to sober up before getting caught, if they are ever caught, will face a lesser sentence.
Many states have increased penalties for fleeing the scene of a crash in order to prevent the behavior. Other states have tried implementing earlyalert systems so that police can acquire help from people in the community who may have tips about the offender or the vehicle involved in the crash.
