Driver Issued Citation After Striking and Killing 54-Year-Old Man

BRONZEVILLE, IL- Chi.streetblog.org writes that 54-year-old Eric Morris was struck and killed in an accident in Bronzeville on Monday, November 26, 2018, at about 7 p.m. The driver, a 36-year-old man, was traveling north in a Toyota Camry when he hit Morris on South King Drive.

Morris was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead.

Police have issued a citation for the driver for “failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.”

Pedestrian crashes have increased in Chicago, and in the United States as well. Across the country, the last two years saw pedestrian fatalities reach close to 6,000. The numbers are higher than they have been in decades. There have been many theories as to whatis causing the high number of pedestrian deaths. Heavier traffic resulting from an improved economy and lower fuel prices is one theory. Another is that both drivers and pedestrians are on their smartphones and not paying attention to the road. There is not much hard evidence to supportthe distracted pedestrian theory, and some studies have indicated that the rising number of SUVs on the road is playing a role in the increased number of deaths. SUVs and other larger vehicles are somewhat more likely tocause fatalities than are cars because they are bigger and higher and when they hit people, they tend to hit them higher up on their bodies.

Some cities have been able to greatly reduce the number of pedestrian deaths through a combination of efforts including designing safer streets, lowering speed limits and more aggressive enforcement of moving violations. Chicago has started its own Vision Zero initiative aimed at eliminating traffic deaths, the success of which remains to be seen.
