In 2013, usatoday.com published an article stating that fatal hit-and-run accidents were increasing in the United States even while overall traffic-relatedfatalities were on the decline. According to the CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Peter Kissinger, drunk driving is a major contributing factor in many hit-and-run cases.

Drivers who are drunk, or in violation of another traffic law are more likely to flee the scene of a collision because they knowthat they will be facing additional charges if they are caught. Many states have taken steps towards tougher penalties for leaving the scene of an accident in an effort todeter people from trying to flee the scene of a crash.
