Alcohol is a key contributing factor in manyfatal crashes every year in the United States. A little less than a third of all traffic fatalities are caused by drunk drivers. In the past few decades, advocacy groups have fought to reduce the number of drunk drivers. The efforts have been successful in greatly cutting down on the number of drunk drivers and has helped to make driving under the influence a practice that is culturally stigmatized. However, many people still choose to drive after drinking, and an increasing number of people are driving under the influence of drugs such as marijuanaor prescriptions that can impair drivers. The issue of drugged driving had made it more difficult for police to enforce impaired driving laws.

Fortunately, in some places, ride-sharingservices are helping decrease the number of impaired drivers.
