The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has been working to decrease the number of car accidents that take place on Illinois roadways every year through its Driving Zero Fatalities to Reality campaign. The goal of the initiative is to eliminateroadway fatalities completely. The program’s goal is similar to Vision Zero campaigns that have been startedin cities around the world, including in Chicago.

Despite the effort, the number of car crashes and the number of fatal car crashes have both increased in recent years in the state. IDOT’s data indicates that the number of car accidents on Illinois roadways went from 281,788 in 2011 to 313,216 in 2015. During the same timeframe, the number of deadly crashes rose from 835 to 914, and the number of individuals killed went from 918 to 998.

Speeding has been a major contributing factor in many of Illinois’ car accidents. Speed-relatedcrashes rose by 5.5% in 2015 over 2014, and when compared to the previous four-year average, speed-relatedfatal accidents were up 8.4% in 2015. However, alcohol-relatedcrashes declined over the same time period.

Illinois has also experienced an increase in fatal motorcycle accidents. Illinois is one of a very small minority of states that does notrequire motorcyclists to wear helmets.
