Fatal Crash in Shelby County, Illinois on October 3, 2018

SHELBY COUNTY, IL- The effinghamdailynews.com reports that a man died in a collision in Shelby County on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. The victim’s identity was released on Friday, October 5, 2018. David L. Arkebauer was killed in a two-vehicle collision at around 10:50 p.m.*

The Illinois State Police report that the crash took place at the intersection of Center Street and U.S. Route 51 in Oconee. Arkebauer was driving east on Center in his 2008 Chevrolet Uplander, and reports indicate that he failed to yield to traffic traveling on Route 51.

The driver of a 1999 Dodge truck, 58-year-old Michael McDonald was driving south on Route 51 and the vehicles collided.

Arkebauer was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Reports indicate that Arkebauer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. McDonald had his seatbelt on when the accident took place. McDonald sustained minor injuries in the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Illinois requires that every vehicle occupant over the age of 8 wear a seatbelt. Children under 8 years old must be restrained in a child restraint system.

Seatbelt laws were enacted in Illinois in 1985. Since then, the rate of seatbelt usage among vehicle occupants in the state has increased greatly. When the state conducted the first survey on the issue, it was in 1985, and only 15.9 percent of vehicle occupants used their seatbelts. By 2016 the number had risen to 93 percent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), seat belts can lower the risk of being severely injured or dying in a car accident by about 50 percent. In 2016, nearly 15,000 people were saved by seatbelts.
