Fatal accidents between cars and large trucks typically involve the person in the smaller vehicle being killed. In fact, when large trucks and passenger vehicles are involved in deadly collisions with one another, the victims are the people in the passenger vehicles 97 percent of the time. The massive size of large trucks and their weight, which is often about 20 or 30 times that of a passenger vehicle, make them incredibly hazardous to smaller vehicles.
Because of how much they weigh, it can take about 20 or 40 percent farther for a truck to come to a stop than it does for a smaller vehicle. This makes it impossible for these vehicles to stop short in the event of an emergency.
