23-Year Old Woman Celebrating Birthday Sustains Fatal Injuries in Fiery Uber Accident
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – As reported online by WGN 9 News, a 23-year-old woman was killed when the Uber she was riding in was hit from behind on the Stevenson Expressway.*
According to the Illinois State Police, in the early morning hours of April 28, 2019, a 23-year-old woman celebrating her birthday was killed in a tragic accident on the Stevenson Expressway near the Damen Avenue exit. The woman, along with two other passengers, were riding in an Uber vehicle that was struck from behind. The Uber vehicle later burst into flames when it struck the side of the expressway.
The Uber driver, along with the two additional passengers, were able to escape the burning vehicle, but the 23-year-old woman, who was sitting in the back seat, unfortunately, did not survive. The Uber driver was treated for injuries at the scene of the accident, while the two surviving passengers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Law enforcement officials spent approximately eight (8) hours investigating and cleaning the scene of the accident which left the Stevenson Expressway closed until 11:00 a.m. later that morning.
The vehicle that struck the Uber from behind had allegedly been speeding, which may have played a role in causing the fatal accident. The driver of this vehicle attempted to flee the scene of the accident but was later caught and arrested by the Illinois State Police. A passenger to this individual’s vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Whether the driver of the vehicle that struck the Uber will face criminal charges is unclear at this time. However, given that an extensive investigation is necessary, the police may not release information on potential criminal charges until a later date.
