Pedestrian deaths have increased in recent years and have now stayed steadily at a 25-year high for the last two years. Between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent. During the same years, other types of traffic fatalities decreased by 14 percent. Many safety improvements come in the form of protections for people in vehicles, but do not serve to prevent pedestrian crashes. The result is that a larger percentageof traffic fatalities is now made up of pedestrians.
Pedestrian accidents happen more often when it is dark out, and in many cases, pedestrians were crossing streets outside of designated crosswalks. Other factors impacting the likelihood of a pedestrian accident, and the severity of an accident include the speed at which a vehicle is traveling, and whether the driver or the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol at the time of thecrash. Newer studies indicate marijuana may also play a role in some of these crashes.
