ALGONQUIN, IL- The chicago.suntimes.com writes that a man was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday, October 31, 2018, in suburban Algonquin.
The victim was identified as 53-year-old David Popovich. Popovich was walking across Algonquin Road at 6:12 in the evening when he was struck by a westbound vehicle. The incident took place near Algonquin’s border with Crystal Lake.
Popovich lived in Lake in the Hills, about one block from the location of the crash. The victim was transported to the Lutheran General Hospital where he died of his injuries the following day at about 1:50 in the afternoon.
The driver who struck the victim was identified as a 50-year-old Algonquin woman who did not suffer any injuries and did not seem to be impaired. No charges were filed against the driver.
Pedestrian deaths have increased in recent years and have now stayed steadily at a 25-year high for the last two years. Between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent. During the same years, other types of traffic fatalities decreased by 14 percent. Many safety improvements come in the form of protections for people in vehicles, but do not serve to prevent pedestrian crashes. The result is that a larger percentageof traffic fatalities is now made up of pedestrians.
Pedestrian accidents happen more often when it is dark out, and in many cases, pedestrians were crossing streets outside of designated crosswalks. Other factors impacting the likelihood of a pedestrian accident, and the severity of an accident include the speed at which a vehicle is traveling,and whether the driver or the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol at the time of thecrash. Newer studies indicate marijuana may also play a role in some of these crashes.
