Fatal Rollover Crash on I-80 in Joliet, Illinois on November 5, 2018

JOLIET, IL- The chicago.suntimes.com writes that a woman from Lockport died in a rollover accident that took place on Monday, November 5, 2018. The crash took place on Interstate 80 in Joliet.

The victim, 22-year-old Jeanine Ibrahim was operating a 2016 Toyota Corolla at a little after one in the afternoon in the eastbound lanes. Reports indicate that the Corolla left the roadway and struck a tree before flipping over.

The victim was declared at the scene. Ibrahim did not have her seatbelt on at the time of the crash.

Only three percent of crashes involve a vehicle rolling over. However, about 30 percent of roadway fatalities are caused by rollover crashes indicating just how fatal these crashes are to vehicle occupants.

One major factor in whether a person will survive a rollover crash or not is whether the person is using their seatbelt.  In 2016, 67 percent of people who died in rollover collisions were not using their seatbelts. One of the reasons that not wearing a seatbelt in one of these collisions is so deadly is that people can be thrown from their vehicle if they are not restrained. Vehicle ejections are extremely deadly. Seatbelts also are designed to prevent vehicle occupants from hitting their head on the roof of their vehicle when it overturns.

Seat belts save thousands of lives every year. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that around 15,000 people survived car accidents because of their seatbelts. The chances of being injured or dying ina collision drop by about half when a person uses a seatbelt. While airbags offer added protection, they work best when a person is using a seatbelt.
