JACKSON COUNTY, IL- According to kfvs12.com, a crash in Jackson County on the morning of Friday, November 9, 2018, at about 2:12 a.m. left one person dead.

The collision involved only one vehicle. The investigation indicated that the driver was traveling southbound on West Road when the vehicle veered from the roadway and hit the guardrail of a bridge. The driver got stuck inside the vehicle, which then caught on fire. The Jackson County Coroner pronounced the individual dead at the scene of the crash.

The investigation is still underway.

Single-vehicle crashes are responsible for about one out of every five vehicle-related deaths in the United States. In the United States, about 8,000 people are killed in this type of crash every year. Driver errors cause most of these collisions, although bad weather and slick roads can increase the risk of drivers losing control. The behaviors that most often lead to these accidents include speeding, which plays a part in about 90 percent of run-off-the-road single vehicle accidents, alcohol, which is more often a factor in single-vehicle collisions than other types of accidents, distracted driving, and drowsy driving.

Drivers can reduce their risk of being involved in these collisions by staying sober, alert and driving at a speedthat abides by the posted limit, or accounts for road or weather conditions that warrant a slower speed.

New advances in vehicle technology may be able to help curb some of these dangerous behaviors by alerting drivers when they are not focusing on the road or are veering out of their lane.
