ORLAND PARK, IL- Patch.com reports that a single vehicle collision injured four people on Saturday, October 6, 2018. The crash took place in Orland Park at about 11:15 p.m.*
The car was traveling on South Ridgeland Avenue and drifted off the roadway where it struck a utility pole and then crashed into a tree.
Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident and all four sustained injuries.
Reports did not include the nature of the injuries received by the vehicle occupants.
A high number of fatalities are caused by fixed object crashes. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a full 20 percent of all motor vehicle collision crashes are caused by vehicles leaving the road and striking objects. Most commonly struck objects include trees and utility poles. Trees are hit in nearly half of all fatal fixed object collisions. The next most common object struck by vehicles is a utility pole, which occurs in around 13 percent of incidents.
Distracted driving and drunk driving are some common causes of these accidents. Trying to change driver behavior has not proven effective at stopping these types of crashes. The best way to prevent many of these fatal collisions from happening is to avoid having objects along the side of the road. While this is not always possible, when it can be accomplished, it is the best way to prevent fixed-object crash fatalities. If an object must be along the side of the road, a barrier should be present, although this method is not particularly effective. Increasing the visibility of objects can also prevent some crashes.
