MACOUPIN COUNTY, IL- Bnd.com writes that a woman from Macoupin County was killed in a head-on collision that took place on Illinois 111 on Saturday, November 24, 2018. The Illinois State Police report that the accident occurred a little before 6:30 p.m.
The victim was identified as 66-year-old Lyndall Huff, who was operating a 2012 GMC truck when a 2004 Ford truck traveled across the center line of the road and hit Huff’s vehicle head-on. Huff was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.
The driver of the Ford and a passenger who was traveling in the GMC were both injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatmentof injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
The crash caused the roadway to be shut down for about 7 hours.
The incident is still being investigated.
Head-on collisions are extremely deadly crashes because when two vehicles strike one another while traveling towards one another the forces of the vehicles are multiplied. The chances of surviving one of these collisions drop when vehicles travel at more than 43 miles per hour, which means that even when two vehicles are traveling at a fairly modest speed, these crashes can be fatal.
One way to reduce the chances of beinginvolved in a fatal head-on collision is to avoid roads that have speed limits over 40 miles per hour and donot have a median or traffic barrier between opposite traveling lanes of traffic. Even drivers who are cautious and alert at the wheel can be involved in these crashes because when a driver veers across a center line, it happens quickly and often without warning.
