DIXON, Ill. — A crash between two pickup trucks kills one person on Illinois Route 2, situated to the northeast of Dixon. The fatal collision happened on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, about 3:30 p.m. according to wqad.com.The leading cause of the fatality remains under investigation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.*
Sheriff’s deputies have yet to determine why a 60-year-old man from Dixon drove his pickup truck over the center line of the divided highway and careened into another pickup truck heading in the opposite direction.
A 68-year-old man named Stephen Vagle was operating his truck northerly on Illinois Route 2 when the 60-year-old drove his pickup from the southbound lane into the northbound lane. First responders rushed Mr. Vagle to the nearest hospital. Regrettably, doctors pronounced Mr. Vagle deceased not too long after arrival. Mr. Vagle’s passenger, a 49-year-old woman, went to the hospital with severe but non-life threatening injuries.
The 60-year-old man operating southbound suffered severe injuries. Medics airlifted him to a hospital in Rockford, Illinois for treatment. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office did not release the status of the medical conditions of the driver from Dixon or the injured female passenger.
The investigation conducted by the sheriff’s department will likely focus on ascertaining why the 60-year-old driver lost control over his pickup truck. One reason could be a medical event that precipitated the driver’s loss of control. Alternatively, the driver could have been under the influence of alcohol or other substance, including prescription medication. Additionally, the driver who lost control could have been driving while distracted.
There are other reasons why a person might drive into the opposite lane of travel such as solar glare or a dangerous condition in the roadway.
The investigating sheriff’s deputies did not say if they might charge the operator from Dixon.
