Drivers involved in hit-and-run crashes are often guilty of another unrelated crime. Drivers are more likely to flee the scene of an accident if they feel that they are potentially facing serious legal penalties. In an effort to curb this dangerous behavior, states have made the penalties for fleeing the scene of a crash more severe. Still, many hit-and-run drivers are never caught. Another approach states have taken to reduce these types of crashes is to implement notification programs that allow the public tohelp report information regarding the vehicle or the suspect following a hit-and-run. The programs work similar to Amber Alerts and are used to gather information quickly before the trail goes cold.
