Callahan was operating a 2017 Ford and driving southbound on Route 1 when he crossed into the northbound lane and hit an oncoming 2013 Dodge. Police did not release the name of the man driving the Dodge.
Callahan’s vehicle overturned and landed in a ditch where it then caught fire. The Dodge remained on the roadway. The man driving the Dodge sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Head on collisions aresome of the most violentcrashes on the road. Vehicles do not need to be traveling particularly fast to cause fatal crashes when they hit one another head-on. According to studies, the likelihood of a person living through a head-oncollision drops significantly when the vehicles are moving above 43 miles per hour.Despite the severity of these crashes, there are many roads across the country that are not divided with any form of the centermedian that could be used to protect drivers from drifting into oncoming traffic.
Drivers who are distracted, drowsy, or drunk can easily veer across a center line in an instant, leaving oncoming drivers no time to react or avoid being engaged in a deadly crash. For the drivers who are traveling in the correct direction, there is little they can do to protect themselves from one of these sudden accidents. The best way to avoid being involved in a deadly head-oncrash may be to avoid driving on roads that lack center dividers unless the speed limit is lower than 43 miles per hour.
