PIATT COUNTY, IL- Wandtv.com reports that the victim in Tuesday’s crash on Interstate 74 was a firefighter. The victim was identified as Mr. McCrone, 46, a firefighter from Pesotum.
The collision occurred a little after 10 a.m. near the Mansfield exit. Reports indicate that a semi-truck driving in front of McCrone slowed down because of traffic. McCrone could not stop his van in time to avoid the crash. The State Police reported that McCrone was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Illinois has a universal seatbelt law. Anyone traveling in a vehicle is required to use a seatbelt regardless of where they are sitting in the vehicle and their age. Failing to buckle up can result in a fine of at least $25. Fines are greater for not properly restraining a child. One of the larger campaigns is Click It or Ticket. Click It or Ticket has remained a major focus despite the high rate of seatbelt use in Illinois. Currently, 93.8 percent of people use their seatbelts.
