MORRIS, Ill. — A 27-year-old man died after being struck by a tractor-trailer truck on I-80 south and west of Morris, Illinois. Illinois State Police troopers responded to the area of the crash and found the man deceased from his injuries, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The incident reportedly happened just before noon on Thursday, March 14, 2019. Illinois State Police continue to investigate.
Troopers from the Illinois State Police say they responded to a 911 call for a report of a tractor-trailer truck that hit a person on I-80. Troopers found the accident scene on I-80 westbound in the vicinity of Brisbin Road. The site of the crash is reported to be around the 115-mile marker on I-80, about one mile from Brisbin Road.
The troopers learned through their initial investigation that a 45-year-old truck driver from Peoria, Illinois hit the 27-year-old victim as the victim stood in traffic. It is not understood at this point why the victim was standing in the westbound lanes of the Interstate. The news report merely indicates that the man was “standing in traffic” when he was hit. TheMorris Herald-News reported that the truck involved was a Freightliner and that the man who died was “walking in the roadway.”
Emergency medical personnel declared the pedestrian dead at the scene. Illinois State Troopers closed all westbound lanes of I-80 to traffic. They re-routed traffic via Brisbane Road through Morris on Route 6 or north of Morris on Sherrill Road. All westbound lanes of I-80 remained closed for approximately two hours. Troopers re-opened the road around 2:00 p.m.
State police officers issued a press release indicating that the victim’s name would not be released until they notified the man’s next of kin.
Troopers made no arrests at the scene and continue to investigate the facts surrounding the incident.
