According to data released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), single-vehiclecrashes caused 55% of motor vehicle fatalities in 2016. In Illinois specifically, collisions involving one car caused 53% of motor vehicle deaths. Most of these deadly crashes involve a vehicle leaving the roadway, and often flipping.

In many cases, single-vehicle collisions are the result of driver error, and can, therefore, be avoidedby cautious and responsible driving. The best ways to decrease your chances of being in a single-vehicle crash are to avoid the most common dangerous driving behaviors. Speed is often a factor in these crashes, so its wise to drive within the speed limit, and possibly below the speed limit if weather and road conditions warrant a slower speed. You should also avoid drinking and driving. Alcohol frequently plays a part in single-vehiclecrashes. Drivers who are drowsy are at a higher risk of rolling off the road, as are distracted drivers. By making sure that you are alert behind the wheel, you will significantly decrease your chances of a single-vehicle crash.
