Accidents at intersections are extremely common. Over half of all crashes that result in injuries and deaths occur at intersections.

In 2016, there were 1,082 collision-related fatalities in Illinois. Out of that total, 362 fatalities occurred at an intersection.

A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationshowed that intersections controlled by stop signs had the highest number of fatal intersection accidents as compared to traffic signals and other traffic control devices. According to the study, 38% of the 9,520 fatalities that occur at intersections each year happened at stop sign controlled intersections.

While cities around the country have been making efforts to curb traffic-related fatalities, the number of accident in Illinois has continued to increase. Two factors that are likely working against the state are the higher speed limitsand the lack of a motorcycle helmet law.
