Man From Indiana Facing Charges for Fatal Hit-and-Run in Chicago Heights, Illinois

CHICAGO, IL- Washingtontimes.com writes that a man from Indiana is facing charges following a fatal hit-and-run crash that took the life of a woman from Chicago.*

The driver, Joseph Luecke, 50 of St. John, Indiana is accused of striking and killing Penny Pearman, 42, of Chicago Heights on November 4, 2018, and then fleeing the scene of the crash. The defendant’s bond hearing was held last Monday. Bond was set at $50,000.

A police investigation found that Luecke was driving the pickup truck that killed Pearman, and on December 16ththe driver was charged with “one count of failure to report an accident resulting in death.”

Hit-and-run accidents have been increasing across the United States. Many of these drivers, even in the most serious cases, never get arrested or brought to justice. Because so few of these drivers are even found or charged, the behavioral reasons that a person might leave the scene of a crash are not particularly well understood. However, it appears that many drivers who flee the scene of crashes do so because they are violating another law, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or driving without a valid driver’s license.

States have tried to curb the rise in hit-and-run accidents by increasing the penalties for drivers who flee the scene of an accident. In some states, alert systems have been created to enlist the help of the public in providing quick information about the whereabouts of a person or vehicle who left the scene of an accident.
