Medical Emergency Causes Fatal Crash Involving Illinois State Trooper

EDWARDSVILLE, IL- Fox2news.com reports that a man was killed in a crash on Interstate 55. The crash occurred at about 12:30 p.m.when the driver of a Chevy Malibu suffered a medical emergency while driving through a construction zone.*

The driver, identified as a 76-year-old man, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a parked Illinois State Trooper SUV that was alerting drivers of an Illinois Department of Transportation crew that was performing work on a guardrail. The SUV had its lights flashing at the time of the crash. The driver of the Malibu then hit an IDOT truck’s attenuator, which functions as a crash cushion.

The driver was transported to a hospital inthe St. Louis area by airlift. Initial reports indicated that the man was in critical condition, but he was later declared dead. The officer whose vehicle was struck by the driver of the Malibuwas seriously injuredin the collision. She was transported to a nearby hospital fortreatment.

The crash occurred on a stretch of I-55 that has been the location of a number ofa seriouscollision in recent months. In the last eight months, one six-mile stretch of the interstate has seen tensevere collisions. Another construction zone crash in the area caused a shutdown of I-55 about a month ago,andfive people lost their lives in pileups in late 2017.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 750 people died in construction and maintenance work zone crashes in the United States every year between 1982 and 2014. In recent years, the number has been on the decline, with an average of 591 per year between 2008 and 2014.
