Missouri Duck Boat Accident Kills Illinois Woman

IL- The Chicago.suntimes.com reports that a woman from Illinois was killedin a tragic boat accident in Missouri that cost 17 people their lives. The victim from Illinois was identifiedas Leslie Dennison, 64. The victims ranged in age from one to 76. The accident happened on Thursday, July 19, 2018,at about 7 p.m. on Table Rock Lake which is locatednear Branson.

According to weather records, a severe thunderstorm warning was issuedfor the area around the lake. The winds reportedly reached about 70 miles per hour. The warning was issued about half an hour before the boat capsized.

Twenty-nine people were on the boat when it sank, fourteen people survived, but seven of them were injured. One survivor said that while the boat had life vests, the captain of the boat told the passengers that they would not require life vests. She said that by the time the storm hit, it was too late.

Duck boats are capable of traveling on the land and in the water. These vessels have been involvedin other tragic accidents in the past. In 2015, five college students died in a collision between a duck boat and a bus. In 199, a duck boat sank in Hot Springs, killing 13 people.

The duck boat sank in an area where the water was 40 feet deepbut then rolled into a deeper area that was about 80 feet deep.

The cause of the tragedy is still undetermined. The investigation indicates that the winds had hurricane forces, but investigators are not sure why the boat went out in the first place.
